LIFE NOW

 Life’s a Bitch . . . But Then You Die.

That’s been my Happy Tale of late when I’m talking to my pet cat, Midnight, as he complains to me about his many tales of woe.  As I hit and then passed by 90 years, this little whimsical saying has become my motto.

For one thing, I had a minor accident, tripping on a stair and then banging my head against our kitchen wall. I felt the back of my head, but detected nothing amiss. Then two days later, I came down with Shingles, despite having had my Shingles vaccination shots.  It was odd. I experienced no adverse effects from my fall and whacking my head. But two days later, I noticed a rash on my left side. I thought, “hmmm, is this rash an effect of somehow twisting my body and then whacking my head?” And then my doctor-daughter looked at it and said, “Ohhh, you seem to have Shingles”. And I said, “No, I had the Shingles shots, remember?” And, she said, “Well, maybe those shots failed to work, cuz you clearly have Shingles.”

And so, for the past 4-5 weeks, I have been struggling with Shingles. It’s a combination of a stomach that feels off and on like I have strained the interior muscles, to my outer skin feeling super sensitive, both itchy and like I’ve been burned. Oh, and then periodically, someone sticks a needle into the skin. Such fun. I am taking Gaba Pentin pills, and spreading  a Lidocaine salve on the area, but if it’s working I can’t tell.

So, life, at the moment, sucks, and I have begun thinking of The End of Life. You know, that period when you no longer know anything, not even that you are no longer alive.

And then, that creature, The Donald enters my brain, either through the radio, the TV News, or my computer, where maybe 2/3 of my e-mails try to tell me something awful that he has done or is doing, you know, like his latest mess with Zelensky and Vlad.  Remember his yakking while he was running for President that second time? He was going to bring peace in one day.  And people, MAGAHeads, actually seemed to believe him and so, voted for him.  How was that possible? Are any Americans that stupid that they believe anything he says and actually cast their vote for him? Well, apparently the answer is YES.  And so, with now 3 ½ years to go in his term, and me in my state of Shingles desperation, I have begun assuming that maybe LIFE may not be worth it. Were I not Happily married to a wonderful woman, I almost assuredly would be thinking of how to end this state of being.  But I am Happily married and my wife of 70 years is a wonder woman. She makes my life worthy of continuance, despite its now many woes.  And so, I will continue.

But that creature, The Donald will continue to make my life, and the lives of millions, a misery.  He is the most miserable creature ever to spring to life during my lifetime. In terms of leaders, I have been aware of them since maybe FDR. I still remember listening to him on the radio, when I was maybe 5 or 6.  I still remember vividly FDR telling us about December 7th and that Pearl Harbor bombing.  Even then, at that early life stage, I remember being appalled.  But then, FDR led me through all the horrors of WW II until its successful conclusion.  And then I reverted to “The Shadow”—“who knows what evil lurks in the minds of man? The Shadow knows”.  And then “Gangbusters”, and “Charlie McCarthy” and on and on.  That was ended and then the parade of Presidents began – Truman, Ike, JFK (the original) Johnson, Nixon (oh god, remember him?), Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush II, Clinton, Obama, Trump and Biden. And I followed them all, my mind cringing during Reagan, and Nixon. But none of them even come close to Trump. His awfulness brings to mind maybe Hitler, although I know the comparison is not fair.

But to now be faced with another Trump at my advanced age of 90, knowing I haven’t much longer (nobody in my family ever made it beyond 85) gives me mental creepies.  He does bring to mind Hitler, and that is really hard for my mind to comprehend. Because, it is not merely Trump. Trump is the End Game of a subset of American people. He is here, making Americans miserable, because Americans voted for him. And that is my saddest commentary. Americans actually voted for this idiot-malenfant. Think of what that means about America.  And so, I am stuck with my Shingles, and Donald Trump. How is that for a way to end your life?  AND, I see no solution. Republicans and democrats in Congress seem incapable if even slowing him down. SCOTUS, my once preferred solution to such problems, now seems DEAD.  So, short of a bullet through his head (unlikely) I see no solution. But hey how about a heart attack?  Oh right, there’s that. And then we get JD Vance, who might actually be worse. Nice, huh?

OK, so you better just Keep On Truck’n Richard. Quit bitching, and continue to enjoy your wonderful wife. OH and all those great kids , grandkids, and Great grandkids. Yeah, so shut up for a while.

Life With The Drumpf

And Life goes on. The fact that I am 90 is of little interest to anyone, barely so to me. Occasionally, I see someone who is, say, 75, who looks older than me, and I scratch my head, and say, Whoa, really??? 75??? Wow!

And then I move on. And that’s how it is with Donald Trump. He rants to a mike about water coming or not coming out of a shower, And I think, This is our President??? Seriously? Then we have all this shit about the Tariffs. They are on, they are off, well maybe they are on, except for Apple I-Phones??  Oh, probably Trump has an Apple I-Phone. Sort of like the stocks that waned and then surged. Remind me, how much money he made??

And then his BFF bombs some place in Ukraine that is exclusively private, with no war effort inside, and dozens or hundreds die. And The Drumpf says nothing and does nothing. He has only been in office a few months, but he has already turned the Presidency into a bad joke. And do I hear anything from the Democrats??? No, they are still debating why Kamala lost, I guess. And the GOP?? Well, the GOP now stands for the General Opposition Portal. Whenever anyone says or writes anything negative about Trump, the GOP mouths something terminally stupid in response.

And we are facing the better part of four more years of this insanity. And see, I was young but much alive when FDR told us on the radio about Pearl Harbor. So, I have lived through Nixon, and Shrub and even Ronald Reagan. And as difficult as those times were for all of us, Democrats and republicans alike, there is simply no comparison with today and the Drumpf. Knowing that our President is a crook, and a con man, and way more incompetent than any politician we have ever witnessed, makes facing each day very difficult.  Plus, we have a Hitleresque figure sitting over the Kremlin, currently raining death and destruction all over the Ukraine, with our President apparently giving him the two thumbs up, making life even more difficult.

But I don’t know what is more difficult—watching Vlad the Impaler rain Hell on the Ukraine daily, or watching our Congress, Dems and Reps alike, sit on their asses and do nothing to arrest our President, or at least try to stop him from worsening our world even more.  It is really like all of Congress is simply fast asleep. And yet, we pay each of them something in the range of $174,000 each year.  Think of that! How much do you get paid—no, not you Elon, you ordinary working stiffs out there. And yet, despite that $174,000, they feel it is ok to do nothing to stop the utter destruction of the entire American government??? And I mean NOTHING.

How does that make you feel folks?

Impeachment anyone???

Oh and don’t forget, Vance is worse, so we must rid the world of him too.

Please folks.

Do something to rid America of this diseased entity sitting in the White House. He is a menace to our entire world.

Life

Hmmm, is it just me, or is life without Trump chaos getting boring?  I mean, yeah, whenever he opens his mouth something terminally stupid comes out, but I’m now beginning to wonder whether he is afflicted with dementia.  It is hard to conjure another explanation for someone seemingly as stupid. And that might seem sad rather than hysterically stupid. Makes me wonder whether there was ever such a let-down period in Italy under Mussolini. Likely not in Germany under Hitler. I mean, he was so busy rounding up Jews for his killing machines.

And speaking of Jews and killing machines, what are we to make of Bibi and his killing machines?  I really do understand how the Stupids at HAMAS must trigger his killer instinct, but it really does seem as though Bibi keeps going over the mark of any reasonable human instinct. He seems to be beyond even his Israeli public. And now he could even mess up domestic politics here in the USA. I mean Biden does not need to give folks here any reasons to walk away from his election. We need all reasonable folks to show up at the polls and vote for Biden come this November.  Because we really, really do not need another Trump Presidency. Course, the Supremes could still act rationally and keep him (Trump) away from such a course.  But they seem a pretty unreliable course director for America.

But as I approach my 90th this December, I am finding life in this here America more and more difficult to understand, no less tolerate. I mean, I worked in the US government under Ronald Reagan for heaven’s sake. And even that was at least tolerable. To be fair, I joined government when Carter was still president, but then St. Ronald intervened and somehow swayed the American public. Imagine that, Jimmy Carter, the sole of reason and morality kicked out of his presidency by the American people in favor of Ronald Reagan.  Still, to be fair, working under Reagan, as difficult as it was, must have been the definition of reason when compared with what life must have been like for workers under Donald Trump.  Now, to be fair, I finally quit after four more years because I was in fear of becoming braindead.  He brought in as my political boss, the stupidest man I had ever worked with or for.  Still, Reagan now seems the definition of reason when compared with Trump. I still cannot understand how any thinking human can even consider casting their vote for Donald Trump.  Well, maybe his ongoing run-ins with our Justice system coping with his dozens of criminal offenses will actually, eventually cause Americans to return to sanity.  You think folks?

Oh well, maybe I can stop thinking about Donald Trump for a while and think about . . . what, Global Climate Change? I refer to events such as that recent sortie of tornados that did much damage and killed some folks in our Midwest recently. That really scares me, almost as much as a Trump presidency. And we seem to have about as little control over either of them.  I keep thinking, “God, I am almost 90. What an awful way to have to live out my limited remaining life period,” But then, I think, “hell, Richard, think about your grands and your Great Grands. They have their whole lives ahead of them. What are they thinking?”

Maybe America, and perhaps even the world at large will finally come to its senses and begin to deal with Climate Change before it becomes irreversible. And then, maybe they will throw out the Trumps of this world (and there are many), and engage sane behaviors instead of killing everything in front of them. Yeah, a sane world, maybe even a peaceful world, where Love could re-enter and Hate would beat a hasty retreat. We (my generation) failed at that, but maybe the generations of youngsters will finally enter and begin acting rationally. Now that would be nice, even if I am not here to see it happen. So, c’mon kids, it’s your turn at the wheel of Life.

Life and Life

With all the highly publicized killings going on in Gaza/Israel and in the Ukraine, I wondered about some recent talks officialdom has been holding about victim compensation. Like, if we kill 500 innocent civilians, including children, how much should we compensate the country?

So, what is human life worth? Is each life worth the cost of a case of beer?  Hmmm, tough one.

And then, after I arise early each morning, I trod downstairs and go outside to take a picture of the morning sunrise. And I accompany my picture, being posted on Facebook with, “Morning lovely. Be kind. Peace bro.” And then again, in the evening, as the sun commits itself to setting, I post another picture and write, “OK, It’s Time to Wine On. So Do It.”

But in between, an entire day of personal steps and events occurs. I look out the window and observe a bird at one of our feeders. Or our mailman stops by to drop off our daily mail and we chat briefly about his day and the events of that day.

And at some stage, I shove a toothbrush into my mouth and clean my teeth. But only after consuming some freshly brewed espresso, and a sliced mango. Or I go out into the garden with some clippers and snip off some unwanted plants in the garden.

Or I sit with a glass of wine, as we munch on some dinner while watching a British mystery, or comedy on our TV. And then, at some stage, we take off our night dress and climb into bed, and turn off the lights, as we both try to engage in that thing called Sleep.

See these are all little signs that we are not a case of beer, or some other commodity one may purchase at the corner store. We are living creatures. We breathe, we laugh, and sometimes we cry. And we think.  Yeah, that thinking thing. Something comes across your consciousness that today is December 7th, and that springs a memory of that fateful day, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day. Yeah, we’re really old, so we have an actual memory locked inside our heads.

Life is really a series of large and small memory snippets. We do things, or observe things and they are then tucked away into our brains.  See that doesn’t happen to a case of beer. Humans and really all other living creatures are memory banks. So, when we decide to kill off a bunch of humans of varying ages, we are eliminating those memory banks. And the young ones especially are deprived of all those creative acts and that slowly building memory bank filled with good and bad images.  And we, the world at large are also deprived of the acts those living creatures might have created. As we shoot or bomb that 3-year old, maybe we are killing the next Van Gogh, or Shakespeare, and we will never get to understand what our act of killing actually accomplished.

Killing is a truly mindless act, because if we thought about the act, it would become near to impossible to carry out.  In Gaza, folks who identify with Hamas seem not to mind killing folks, as long as those folks are Israeli. See, they don’t care that they are stealing future life events from people who identify as Israeli. And so, they also, without proper understanding, create within those same Israelis the same sense of armor around the brains that will allow Israelis to do the same thing to Hamas humans.

But it isn’t just in Gaza. Some idiot in Nevada, followed on the heels of another idiot in Texas, or was it somewhere else in America (so many shootings, so little time), managed to shoot innocent humans who had done nothing except wander into the wrong place at the wrong time.  See, with guns at their easy disposal, angry humans continue to cut off the future lives of other humans, who will then no longer experience watching a sunrise or a glorious sunset.

Killing is so final and eliminates hundreds, even thousands of gestures of love.  Life is really quite amazing. I am now in my 88th year of that thing we call life.  And I have thousands of tiny events registered within my brain. Event images embedded within me that might have gone unnoticed had I died earlier.  I may die, any day now. Who knows? But I also may live another set of days and weeks and even years, creating and observing small and large things that others in the world may also observe.

Why can we not commit to peace and love?  Why can we ban books but not guns? Amazing really.

Well friends, continue to think and try to observe life all around you. Think about what happens to you today, and think, “I am grateful for the good things in my life”.  Try to be happy. But at least, try to BE. And do your best to allow that person next to you also BE.

Life Goes On

Ahhh, the weather just shifted to humane. Suddenly, it’s ok to open the windows, instead of sitting inside in fear that the heavy rain will flood the basement.  It has not done so in quite a while, But worry I will. Maybe it’s my age. I am getting on there—approaching 89 in December.

But more than the weather, was recent news of two friends and colleagues who just passed on, both a bit younger than me.  And both passed peacefully, but suddenly.  George Stiles was a colleague who became a friend, then practically a member of our family. I met George during the 1970s in the course of my work.  Then he was more than helpful to our daughter’s quest to gain entry into the world of UNC-Chapel Hill. And then George became a friend of long-standing. We saw him with some frequency as he rotated from his family home in Yarmouth, Maine to Philadelphia and South Carolina where his kids lived. George became part of our family.

And then, without warning, he died, peacefully we are told. But it is a shock nonetheless.

And then, my old boss and colleague Joe Wholey died. I was in a bit of a mess career-wise in the early 1970s, having left a secure job at Peat, Marwick, Livingston for a small firm that then collapsed. Through Joe, I managed to get a secure position at The Urban Institute, where I worked in the field of evaluation of health care programs. After five years, Joe left to join the Carter Administration, running an evaluation office in the Department of Health Education and Welfare. Joe asked me to join him, which I did. But then, Ronald Reagan took the presidency and we all had to cope with his administration. I managed for five years, but then grew fearful that I might become brain-dead working under Reagan. So, I left, as did Joe Wholey before me.

And now Joe has left this world.

And I remain behind to continue thinking about these truly good humans.

But it all brings to mind aging, and watching people drop all around me. Not just people with whom I am friends, but people of whom I am aware. We watch a lot of British TV, and especially one program that brings us to laughter even now. It is a show called “Are You Being Served?” It was on From 1972 to 1985.  I discovered recently that all of the acting cast had now died and they varied in age during that show.  So, now we find ourselves watching and loving a TV comedy series in which none of the acting cast remains alive.  I know, I know, it’s a TV show. Time passes, people age and then they die. And meanwhile I sit here, aging in place.

But then, look, our President is 81. And that idiot-malenfant Donald Trump is in his 70s, and poised to die. So, everyone is “aging in place.” But hey, they’re running our country. Well, technically, Joe Biden is running our country while Donald Trump is trying desperately to destroy our country. Two sides of the same coin I guess.

Well, I guess I will just have to suck it up and keep on truck’n. It ain’t my time yet, even if it is Mitch’s.

Meanwhile, my wonderful wife of 68 years tolerates me and loves and feeds me daily. And my kids, grandkids and Great grandkids continue to embrace life and to being me joy.  So, there you have it. Keep out of trouble and get on with this thing called LIFE.

It’s really all we have, isn’t it?

Life and Pain

So, I awakened on a Saturday morning 1 ½ weeks ago, to a seemingly normal day.  But then as I began the day, I noticed suddenly a new pain. My left back, down by my hip, in that sciatic nerve area, suddenly began throwing pain down my leg from the hip area. Odd, I thought. It’s almost as though someone just flipped a switch. “OK, turn on the pain. It’s his turn to hurt”.  I mean, I know I’m old. 88 years is old by anyone’s definition. But, c’mon folks, I was just as old on Friday when I went to bed. What the hell is going on? I mean, I didn’t fall. I know, Falling is really bad when you’re my age. But I didn’t do that. I just went to bed and woke up with this new pain thing. Now, to be fair, On Friday, I did go to work out at the gym, as usual on Fridays. Then we went shopping at Trader Joe’s. Then what? We came home, put away the groceries and got on with our usual Friday. So I hadn’t tried to lift 400 pounds, or run on the treadmill. Nope. The workout was my usual one—ya’know, boring but a classic old dude’s workout routine.  So, maybe this is Life?  You go along normally and then one day, suddenly life is no longer “normal”.  And then what? It ends? So, this is how it ends? No, that’s crap.

OK, so now I have to go get an MRI. I went for an X-Ray, but it showed nothing beyond the fact that, yeah I’m old.  So, we will have to see what, if anything this MRI thingie shows. They tried “prescribing” some exercises for me, but they seem about as useless as teats on a boar.  See, the central problem is that the docs really did not know what was causing the problem, so they were forced to guess at some ameliorative solution.  Hopefully, after the MRI, we will have actual diagnostic data—a picture of what is actually wrong.

So, we now await that picture.  But maybe I am getting a preliminary picture of life as an old dude. Ya know. Shit happens, and then . . . well then you try to make believe nothing happened. Happily, we have some pretty fine medical practitioners at work trying to help me deduce what happened. Still, I think maybe the Old Guy has begun beckoning. We’ll see.

And in the meantime, I remain hopeful that Tucker Carlson and that Gang of thieves at The Fox Republican Mafia will continue demonstrating to the American people that, deep down, they, directed by Rupert, are actually Anti-American. Well, technically, we know Rupert is. But now we know for sure that the Foxies and all their republican friends are also ANTI-AMERICAN.  So, welcome to our new world folks.

I will yell out and about whenever I discover what is actually wrong with me. Meanwhile, I will limp along as best I can.

What is Life?

Whenever I look out at the morning’s first light, I think about Life. And it always makes me wonder about other folks who are seeing a similar first light.  And then, later in the day, I see a notice on Facebook. Someone has posted a notice of someone famous who has now passed. Or, someone I know has posted a note about a loved family member who is now “on the other side”. And there are the frequent comments about those now-passed folks who are looking down upon us all.

And they make me wonder about Life. I concluded long ago that Life is solely about what we observe here on this place we call Earth.  That there is nothing that follows. No folks sitting gently on a cloud gazing down on us all. And when I “depart”, I will not “see” any of the people I used to hold dear. I will, in fact, no longer “see” anything or anyone.

No, nothing follows Life. Now that is a hard concept to grasp, that nothingness.  I mean, how could that be?  But, I think, what about the butterflies, or the pesky mosquitoes? When they cease to exist in life, is there a cloud somewhere, filled with butterflies, or still pesky mosquitoes?  Well, No, I conclude. There is no such place.

And so it is only (we assume) we humans that continue to pretend that something follows Life.  And we pretend that simply because the alternative is too difficult to grasp.  Now, to be fair, over the millennia, humans have developed this thing I call the Great Ponzi Scheme—or Organized Religion.  And under this scheme, not only is there something following Life here, but there is a whole entity filled with a God(s) and other extraordinary creatures who assure that our lives continue, albeit in a different form.  Now this religion thing exists so as to keep humans in line.  See, not only is there this free floating place called “Heaven”, a cloudy-filled place filled with the remnants of life here on Earth, with otherwise dead folks peering down on their still-alive friends and family, and no doubt frowning on their activities.  But also, the good inventors of Heaven also created this other place called Hell, with yet another God of sorts. Only this God, who is called Satan, is in place within his fiery domain to keep the bad folks in line, by burning them forever within the “Fires of Hell”. It has never been clear to me whether the bad dudes who are consigned to this Hellacious place have to remain there forever, or whether there is some kind of “statute of limitations’ after which the bad dudes also become elevated to the Heaven place, since they have doubtless learned their lesson. Right???

See, questions, lots of questions.

And since there are these knotty questions and no actual answers, I finally concluded that the religious scenario is simply a device to get folks to behave. See, that’s what organized religion actually is—a mechanism to get ordinary humans to behave themselves.  Oh, and the various religions also have this other characteristic—they elevate a few folks to positions above you ordinary folks, you know to supervise you. They get to call you out as a designee for Heaven or Hell. And then you get to choose whether you wish to begin behaving as the superdudes want, or you are ok with the Hell place.

Now suppose, just suppose, that no one had invented this religion thing. Or that, because it seems too silly, everyone on Earth simply ceased believing in it. What might happen then? You know, you awakened one morning and discovered that everyone had finally decided that there is no Heaven and, more to the point, there is no Hell. And then folks began behaving accordingly.  What would that be like?? Whoa Richard, what are you thinking? That would be terminally awful, right?  I mean, were there no payment at the end, would folks not begin behaving so as to achieve all the good stuff while they are still here?  And if there is no penalty box at the end should you misbehave, would that not prompt everyone to begin behaving badly?? Isn’t that the explanation for Donald Trump???  He behaves like a cretin precisely because he believes there is only a payment or a penalty here on Earth, and that nothing he does here will follow him after he ceases to exist? Hmmm, that could be troublesome. Suppose that conclusion led to the creation of thousands, maybe even millions of Donald Trumps. How awful would that be?

Well, that would indeed be awful.  Humankind can only afford to tolerate so many Donald Trumps in one lifetime.  I mean, I have been alive since 1934, and I have experienced Adolph Hitler, and Donald Trump, and Vlad the Impaler Putin, and Donald Trump, and even Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon, not to mention Donald Trump.

Would my Father have been better behaved had he believed that Nothing follows Life?  Well, it is by no means clear that he would have behaved worse, so maybe that question answers itself.  The fact is, whether he believed in a God and that Heaven and Hell thing, he behaved really badly. So, the promises of organized religion failed utterly to dissuade him from acting badly.  Now to be fair, he did not behave so as to kill people like Adolph, or even to cheat people like Donald Trump. No he simply failed at the promises of a decent life.  And what are those promises? Well:

·         After you are created, it is incumbent on you to educate yourself to the best of your ability, so as to understand the world in which you live;

·         As you mature, it is a good thing to consider forging a relationship with someone with whom you might share your time here on Earth;

·         Generally, it is a wise thing to try to secure some method to acquire the resources generally needed to live a pleasant life, as long as you are here;

·         Assuming you succeed in creating other living creatures, it is better to be kind to those creatures and to at least try to pass on what you know concerning how to exist peaceably and well;

·         Concepts such as Love and Helpfulness to others will come to you as you age, and you are encouraged to accept them and to act on their promises;

·         Generally, it is accepted that being kind and helpful to others creates a more just and pleasant world, so you are encouraged to act accordingly.

So, without religion, would Wars increase or decrease?  We cannot know, can we? But I believe that the evidence we have at our disposal at least suggests that the presence of the Heaven or Hell thing dissuades no one from attempting to control others via warfare, and that without religion, it is at least conceivable that War would not increase. Why? Well, I now believe that religion acts to convince certain people that they have the backing of God to act the way they do. At least rhetorically, they are able to claim that mantle. Hitler claimed that Jews were responsible for all the problems of Germany and that he could restore Germany if given the power to destroy all the Jews in his land.  That is one definition of Evil, but he employed the designation of religious groupings to claim a right to power. Now Donald Trump, on the other hand, simply promises the body faithful that he will assure their place in history. They will gain power so long as the folks give him their power as the leader of their pack. Now, to be fair, all political leaders promise something similar, but not all appeal directly to organized religion.

Now it is not the case that Trump, or even Hitler made explicit claims that religious groups, Christians for example, were his central authority base, and that he asserted his power directly from God.  Rather, folks like him recognize that humans tend to organize themselves into groupings, some of which have a religious orientation. But mainly, he sees that the people have themselves created a group and that, if he promises to deliver some power to those groups, he will himself gain power.

I suppose that, lacking religion, humans would still create groups, but those groups might not have the aura of power. If you create a group that is based on being a family member, there is kinship presence but not much in the way of power.  Now, to be fair, if you create or join a group because you are White, you might begin to corrupt that simple premise of skin color into a “We are better then you” mentality. Humans do so love to express themselves that way, don’t they? And again, that mentality can/will express itself eventually into some form of power corruption.

So, even without religion, humans might well become as power-mad as with religion. But it is at least conceivable that humans might not all do such a thing. Maybe even more than now, humans might begin rejecting the power trips, and begin treating other humans as, simply, other humans.  At least that is my premise. Give Love a chance could be a new slogan of humans.  And maybe politicians would be forced to inform us about what issues they plan to address through legislation, rather than which groups they plan on suffocating. That might be nice, huh?

But I know, I’m just being simple-minded. Most folks seem to prefer the power of religious bigotry. I have given it up, not that I ever had much to begin with. Maybe I should give many thanks to my entire family for never forcing me to adopt the rigorous rules of organized religion. And for never teaching me that I was better than other folks who in some way were different from me.  Yeah, we’re all just humans living on this planet for a very brief time. And then we are gone forever. Let us hope we are remembered for the good things we did for others.

So, Be Kind. Peace bro.

LIFE

What is life anyway? It occurs to me, as I prepare our morning cappuccinos, that life is really just tiny gestures, millions of them perhaps, but then it’s gone.  You place a spoonful of ground espresso coffee in the little container, place that container in its proper place in the espresso machine, then turn the dial to the correct mode, and a nice espresso stream flows from the machine into the little cup. And then you turn off the stream just as the coffee reaches the top.  Then you remove the little container and empty its contents of wet espresso coffee. Next, you go to the fridge and pour a little bit of fat-free milk into a small container and bring it over to the espresso machine, where you bring the milk to a foam using a small wand in the machine. Then into each cup of espresso, a layer of milk foam is placed on top, followed by a little bit of cinnamon, and a hint of raw sugar. And there you have another wonderful cappuccino, which you hand to your wonderful wife, and you both clink and say, “to us”.  And then you consume the cappuccino, sipping slowly so as to gather all the aroma and taste available. And there is yet another tiny gesture, one of millions as you wander through your life.

And your life is filled with such tiny gestures. It is in fact what life is all about. We think of life as grand gestures, doing good things for humanity. And some of us have included within our lives just such gestures.  But mainly, our lives are simply collections of the tiny things. And, so I was thinking, one day I will cease to be, and I will no longer carry out these tiny gestures, not to mention the grand ones.  No, I will no longer scratch the top of my cat’s head, or rub my eye, because it is itching, or partake of a glass of wine, or even a glass of water.  And you are unaware that you can no longer partake of these tiny gestures, because your 40 -50 million minutes of life have run out. And a little switch in your brain has simply turned off.  And because you no longer have a functioning brain, you no longer actually exist.  It is as though you were never here, alive and laughing.

But because your entire life is composed of these tiny gestures, perhaps it might be worthwhile to at least be more aware of them.  You see, there is no actual counter in life, no one to tell you, “OK, it’s all over, and now you’re done.” Some people are indeed aware that their life may be ending soon, especially those folks who are afflicted with a cancer, or some other life-ending disease, or those who have been grievously injured and know it is a matter of moments. But most of us don’t know, even those of us who are seriously old—how old is that? Your choice, you decide how old is “seriously old”.

But it is the “paying attention” thing I am drawn to thinking about, now that I am approaching my 87th year on this planet.  Maybe it’s that COVID thing. COVID tends to focus the mind, but mainly only if one contracts COVID. Otherwise, it is merely a distraction.  I find myself going through my work-free day, doing roughly similar things and ending eating dinner and watching British mysteries on TV, day after day. Sometimes, when I awaken for a new day, I have to focus to be sure which day of the week it is.

Now, to be fair, were I still a working class dude, I would be more aware of each day, and would in fact have at least some differences in my chore list each day.  I mean, my goodness, I had to routinely board airplanes, attend meetings in strange towns, call folks to obtain information, or maybe even begin or continue writing some treatise for a client.  But, to be fair, each of those were also small gestures in this grand place we call Planet Earth.  Now, a nice walk along Union Street seems enough of a chore for the day, and that involves dozens of little gestures, called walking and observing.

And as I move along the pathway that is Union Street in our little village, watching for cars as I cross streets, avoiding oncoming pedestrians by walking out into the street, because none of us is wearing a mask, I often begin thinking of other little things and how little good things have been turning into big bad things.  See, I’m focusing. And what are those little things? Well, I was thinking about money, and how money is both a good thing and a really horrible thing.  Think of the invention of money. Initially I am thinking that humans simply traded things. “Let’s see, how about if I give you six tomatoes and you give me six ears of corn?  OK?”  And then the dude with the six ears of corn had to think.  Was that an even trade? Enter MONEY!  Now money seems a simple enough concept. But, as with many seemingly simple ideas, the invention of money involved hundreds of years, and many brains, now long gone, to actually lead us to our current approach.  I looked up the invention of money, and discovered among the many explanations, a few that bear insightful witness to its origins.  The one I might recommend can be found at:

The Functions of Money - The Human Journey

Looking at the origins, as defined in that article, it seems pretty clear that a simple idea, “how many tomatoes equals six ears of corn?”, has now been translated into a monstrously complex system of ideas.  So, money now seems to be a BIG THING.  But not only is Money Big, perhaps because of its complexities, it has also transformed from a simple good idea, into a complex Evil System so corrupt that it now beggars belief.  And our world now seems consumed by this thing we call Money. It now affects everything we do—all the things both big and little now seem at least affected by this Money thing.  And while there are wondrous things done with money, that concept seems more often negative than positive.  And because the acquisition of money is something we all wish for, most of us never acquire the skills or the understanding of money acquisition, so that we spend much of our lives skipping past, or simply ignoring all those little things, because we are preoccupied with this thing called money, and our relative lack thereof.

But we need to understand that, when we enter that dark period where the switch of life is turned off, money will not allow us to escape. No, everyone is dissolved in the same way, although the monied set perhaps leave life with more luxury. Still, they are gone also, and with it, their relative understanding of LIFE and its little gestures—those things of which LIFE is composed.

So, tomorrow, perhaps we all need to pay attention more to LIFE’s little gestures.  As we open our eyes in the morning, look around. Observe your surroundings. Look at that person with whom you occupy your life, if you are so lucky. When they open their eyes, look into those eyes, and smile at that person.  Try to remember as your day progresses the tiny things that consume your day.  Let LIFE into your life. Yes, we all must pay attention to other things like money. But mainly, try to remember the tiny pieces of beauty that arrive each day into your life. A smile, a kind gesture, a wandering butterfly, the sunlight streaming into your window. Notice, and smile. Because that is called LIFE.

Life & The Donald

Living this long, I find myself thinking about why things happen, and what life is really all about.  On a daily basis, I am reminded that humankind is a vastly complex entity, as is everything on this earth of course.  With complexity, comes variation, and with variation comes different life styles of adaptation.

Alright, what do I mean?

Well, it is now very clear that humankind is one kind of animal, with amazing variations.  How do we all vary? Well . . .

·         Gender – some folks come, as we have named, female, and some as what we label as male. But actually, we also know that we have variations within and among those two seemingly unique types, folks who are uncertain of gender, or who are uncertain how they should act as one type or another.  Well, they’re not so much uncertain themselves, but their actions cause the rest of us to become uncertain how we are supposed to react to them.   And these variations have caused over the many centuries we have had humankind, many problems and many blessings, sometimes both at the same time.

·         Skin color – We have a fantastic color spectrum present in humankind. No one is quite “white”, but are certainly close to that end of the spectrum. And some are fairly close to black, but are really a shade or two one side of a perfect black.  As one moves from “black” to “white” other colors are introduced, a bit of red, some yellow, such that we have really a marvelous array of beautiful skin colorings.  For reasons quite mysterious, this skin color variation also causes difficulties in how humankind reacts to one another.

·         Physical size -- From nearly 7 feet, to perhaps 4 feet in height, and from perhaps 20 inches to what, four feet (??) in diameter, humankind presents itself as almost different species.  The size thing certainly creates some tension since relative aggressiveness towards one another seems at least related to the size variation, depending on how different folks perceive size.

·         Brainpower – Here too, amazing variation, not so much in actual physical size of the brain, as in the seeming utility of the brains we possess.  The brain and its apparent utility creates perhaps the most significant of the many variations experienced by humans.  The seeming capacity of the brain seems partly a result of random chance, with genetics being an important component. But also, the extent to which we “train” our brains to think and adapt determines the brain’s utility to us, as we waltz through life.  There seems an odd connection between the ability of the brain to conceive and adapt, and the relative tendency towards violence.   This latter point is unclear at best.

Alright, so humankind is highly variable. So what?  Well, one of the common characteristics of all animals seems to be a desire to control the environment in which they live, control being seen as necessary in order to survive.  And each animal designs its own approach to assuring its own survival, through controlling its environment.  In the case of humans, we seem to have created three distinct mechanisms or systems to assure survival.  We employ these mechanisms, partly in response to our own personal characteristics. What are the three?

1.       Brute strength – especially early man employed physical strength, and then weapons in order to survive (obtain food) and prosper (obtain more food than you need to survive). But brute strength became enhanced dramatically through tribalism.  If strong folks can attract others, perhaps family, or simply others who live nearby, to identify with one, a tribe begins to emerge and then the tribe is relatively stronger than the individual.  And then the stronger/larger tribes are able to counter other tribes, perhaps to become even more powerful, and therefore more secure.

2.       Religion – we seem uncertain when, but relatively early man devised this devilishly clever scheme, we now call religion. Someone began claiming an authentic channel to God. “God has told me thus . . . therefore, you must listen to me. Otherwise, God will smite you dead.”  As different humans claimed a direct relationship to God, different forms emerged whereby ordinary folks could become enchanted with God. And the “wise ones” (those who claim a direct connection to you know who) began writing down assertions about what God wants, such that even more folks could begin to understand who are the “wise ones”. Thus, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and the many variations that now exist, came into being. The key to all of these systems, though, is that leaders claim they have direct knowledge of what God expects, and they have devised approaches that a: allow them to control the dialogues, and b: give them authority and therefore power over the other ordinary humans who possess no special insights.  Ponzi schemes spring to my mind whenever I think of organized religion.
3.       Money – Money seems to have originated through trading. I kill more deer than I can eat, and you kill more buffaloes than you can eat. We can trade and then we will each have a more diverse food stock.  As people traded more things, some folks devised a way to value food stuff, and then other commodities, and so money became necessary and was devised.  Over time, some people became proficient in the art of collecting and trading money (banks??). As some people gathered more money than they needed, they began using money as a way to better control their environments.

But all of these approaches are about control at the most basic level. Now when you combine some of these approaches, you enhance your control, and therefore your power. Tribes, for example, claim religious authority and thus enlarge their power over ordinary humans.  Or religions become themselves a variant on tribes, and impose their authority over other religions (see Christianity).
While tribalism and religion are fairly obvious about their control aspirations, money seems a bit different, more neutral perhaps. After all, what exactly is money? Money is a way to value almost anything and everything, so it seems more technical than control oriented.

But no. As people or institutions gain more money, they begin using that money to do what??? Exercise control.  I am willing to give you some money if you are willing to follow my lead in whatever job you hold. Seems especially important if the job you hold is a member of the government, or even, the head of government (see Trump).  So, the acquisition of money becomes now explicitly an instrument of control. And that is how it is now used, almost exclusively. So, banks of course become instruments intended to help you become more powerful, by increasing your assets--money.  Some banks seem not to mind turning to organized crime, as they help literal organized crime to “launder” its illegally obtained financial assets (see HSBC).

So, having observed this world for now over 8 decades, what I see is the almost complete deterioration of human values, as humanity turns to control mechanisms to control other parts of humanity.  It’s like a caveman system in which we seem to now live, except the cavemen have upgraded their tools of control to the Mark X Mod 9 version.  Slowly, we seem to be losing those aspects of our humanity that make life worth living—love, respect, compassion seem now almost quaint.  Let’s see, what have I been able to observe since I was born in 1934?

Well, the 1930s was a kind of dismal swamp atmosphere. The great crash had just occurred—oh, that was when bankers of the world so overreached their greed (the money thing) that the entire financial world simply collapsed. Now, doubtless, many of the bankers of the world suffered great losses during this period. But my tiny vantage point only revealed the effects on the little people—specifically folks like my grandparents and parents. My grandparents just literally ran out of money. They were now beyond working, and their savings simply disappeared.  My parents were rarely together as a couple, so my mom did the best she could to keep us alive. We had literally, no spare cash.  Money, or the lack thereof ruled our world. In an odd way, the bankers still ruled the world, because although they might have been hurt financially, they still had access to money, whereas the little people had none. Our world stumbled along, with misery being the kindest assessment anyone could make of this dismal swamp universe in which we resided.

And then, the world’s humans awakened to create a new world—a world at War. Yeah, the Hitler tribe in Germany had been forming for some time, becoming more powerful, and finally they simply lost all reason and began killing people, just because they could—all in the name of greater control of course.  And so, the rest of the world decided to forge its own larger tribe, so as to counter the Hitler tribe. And WW II began seriously. Millions died during this period, of course, but the bankers seemed to recover, and then money began flowing again.  And so, money, brute strength, and organized religion joined in a battle for survival of our species. For a while, the outcome was uncertain, but then the Hitler tribe and the Hirohito tribe began losing their way and finally gave up the battle for control.

Now, one would think that some rationality might have crept into that post-War world. But no, humans have this capacity for control and almost immediately the Cold War began. Oh, the shooting stopped for a tiny bit, but then the tribal forces began exerting themselves again, and we were right back at it.  There was Korea, and then that never ending Vietnam thing, both wars all about who would control what territories.

Finally, the wars in Asia stopped, but then the Middle East began erupting, with the overthrow of the Iran government, to be replaced by a terrorist religious faction, demonstrating that organized religion is equally as cruel, yet effective at the control thing.  And that Middle East mess continues to this day, a true never-ending war of control.  It is only partly about religion. Mainly, folks use religion as an excuse for killing people. Religion is so convenient that way. Always available when needed.

Despite this amazing killing field world of the Middle East, always threatening to engulf the whole world, we had some bright spots. Apparently tiring of the despots on the right wing of our nation, some forces for good emerged, and we elected a decent man, who was both bright and ethical, Barack Obama. The right wing never stopped exploding in rage about the election of a decent, humane, intelligent person as our president.  Apparently republicans really hate it when an ethical, bright person takes charge in America. But, we did have eight years of a good leader. He continued to try to do good things, but republicans never let him forget that they were always around him, and they would not stand for a leader trying to do the right thing.

And then Donald Trump.

Explaining Donald Trump is a bit like trying to explain the Big Bang. No one really understands this terminally weird phenomenon. A narcissistic, sociopath, who lies all the time, even when everyone around him knows he is lying, and who is demonstrably unsuccessful at everything he attempts, including both marriage and business, gets elected and continues to have the support of millions of Americans.  His faithful supporters even say they do not mind when he lies. They still love him.  My only conclusion is that he is a religion, all by himself. Only he doesn’t really promise anything after death, you know that thing that all religions promise. He doesn’t.  But it seems not to matter to folks who apparently hate everything for every minute of every day. They hate for a living apparently.

But now, what has he gone and done? Well, having been accused of colluding with the Russians to corrupt our election system, and then denying it, he now loudly announces that he is open for any and all foreign meddling in our next election. He not only doesn’t care, he actively encourages foreign interference.

So, he is announcing that everything people suspected about him is true. He really is corrupt, terminally stupid, and he believes that he is above any Laws of our Land. He doesn’t believe in the Law. He doesn’t care about The Law. He is the complete Narcissist, or maybe, he just imagines himself to be King Donald I, our first absolute monarch.

And with that thought, I am really out of words.
